I liked the era chosen for the book, and it's definitely a breezy, light read. I did feel like the stories ended rather abruptly. It would have been a bit more satisfying to have a little more development, in my opinion.

Romance 50 Style Romance in the 1950 Book 1 eBook Margaret Lynette Sharp Reviews

Ah the 50’s… What an era! Even though it was set 30 years before I was born, I still appreciated this story of Romance, 50’s Style!

The novel is comprised of two stories, Whatever it Takes and Sisters and Rivals. Whatever it Takes is a story of Lisa, who goes back to Australia from London for the wedding of her father to his secretary. She has left behind her boyfriend Liam who she was starting to get serious with. There she runs into an old flame, and has to ultimately decide her future. Sisters and Rivals is the story of Linda. Linda has started dating Harry, whom she adores. However her sister Tessa has a history of stealing her boyfriends. Even though she is engaged to one of Linda’s exes, can Linda trust Harry not to fall for Tessa’s charms?

Loved all the characters! I found Linda to be a bit of a bore though. I guess at that time it was less common to stand up for yourself, and it just wasn’t her personality. However I felt utterly sorry for her situation. It made me appreciate that I am an only child and don’t have a horrid sister!

The thing that I kept thinking about when I read this book was just how different things are now. I guess its up to interpretation to decide if this is a good thing or bad thing, but personally I am glad I am from this generation. I appreciate the different style of “courting” that we have now. It was much simpler back then, or superficially so anyway. Life is different now. Multiple marriages in a life is beginning to be a norm, social values are so totally different, and of course we all have huge flat screen televisions now 😉

I enjoyed the writing style of this book, it was light but interesting and I enjoyed the characters and the dialogue between the different characters. Sharp did a great job recreating the era and the mood of the 50’s with her writing.

I enjoyed the setting of the 50’s in Australia, specifically my home town Sydney. It was interesting reading about places I have been and love, from such a different time perspective.

Would I recommend it?

Yes, for all fans of a little bit of romance and a bit of fun.

Many thanks to author Margaret Lynette Sharp for a copy of this book to review.
Romance 50's Style is a compilation of two fifties era romances by Australian author, Margaret Lynette Sharp.

Sisters and Rivals is a fifties-era romance by Australian author, Margaret Lynette Sharp. Twenty-one year old Linda Brown is finally bringing her new boyfriend home to meet her parents. She hasn’t been going out with Harry all that long, but she is becoming convinced the he may be “the one”. But Linda is apprehensive about introducing Harry to her older sister, Tessa. She may be engaged to Tom, but Tessa is a shameless flirt who possesses a magnetism that seems to attract any man in her orbit. And Linda has good reason to be wary Tom is not the first boyfriend Tessa has lured away from her.

Sharp conjures the fifties with consummate ease. Those times when television was a luxury that few could afford, when premarital sex was not commonplace, when the closest anyone came to an electronic device was answering the clunky black Bakelite rotary-dial telephone that lived in the hall, or listening to the radio, when an evening’s entertainment meant going to a concert or listening to records on the gramophone, all are marvellously evoked and will strike a chord with readers from that era.

Sharp’s dialogue, and the topics of conversation, too, are characteristic of the era. Attitudes and opinions all reflect the times. The tension and rivalry between Linda and Tessa is well conveyed, as are Linda’s feelings of insecurity about Harry’s fidelity. Linda’s lack of confidence means that trust becomes the major issue in this new relationship, an issue that is not completely resolved until the very last page. This is an enjoyable romance with universal appeal. 3.5 ★s

Whatever It Takes is a romance novella by Australian author, Margaret Lynette Sharp. More than five years after being sent to London by her widower father to curtail her association with Josh, Lisa is finally feeling settled and happy. Just as her relationship with Liam seems to be developing into something serious, her father Derek turns up for Lisa’s twenty-first with a young woman in tow. Lisa’s suspicions about Eleanor are soon confirmed when Derek demands her presence back in Sydney for his wedding. Will she see (the now-married-to-her-best-friend) Josh while she is there? Will her fledgling relationship with Liam survive her absence? With this sweet 50s romance, Sharp gives the reader another enjoyable read.
With thanks to the author for this copy to read and review.
Sisters and Rivals takes place in the mid-1950s in Sydney Australia – the story of Linda who lived at home with her Mum and Dad, brother Jim and sister Tessa. Linda worked in a bustling city office; a typist who enjoyed her work. But Linda was worried about her new boyfriend meeting Tessa. Her sister had always been a flirt and she had lost more than one boyfriend to her. What would happen when Tessa met Harry?

Young love, friendships, rivalry, lack of confidence – all create a intriguing mix in this little romance novella by Sharp.

Whatever it Takes is set in both London and Sydney Australia. The night of her twenty-first birthday celebration in the company of Liam and their friends, Lisa received a shock when she was confronted by her father and his secretary – she had thought he was still in Sydney. But further surprise was to come when he told her to return home to Sydney for his wedding. Leaving her studies and Liam was not what she wanted; Lisa’s uncertainty about what would happen on her return to her home town made her uneasy.

Lisa was a strong young woman, and the depth of her strength showed through the further I read through this novella. She was an easy character to like and get to know – the characters were well defined; the romance was light, the entertainment great.

Aussie author Margaret Lynette Sharp has combined two previously published sweet romance novellas into this one anthology titled Romance, 50s Style. I love the cover and the title is catchy. Highly recommended.
I liked the era chosen for the book, and it's definitely a breezy, light read. I did feel like the stories ended rather abruptly. It would have been a bit more satisfying to have a little more development, in my opinion.
