The Zero Stone Andre Norton 9780441959662 Books
I discovered Andre Norton many years ago when I was in my 30s and was just starting to explore science fiction .It was 10-15 years before I discovered she was considered a "juvenile author". Ha! She is an excellent writer and story-teller. Her books have no bad language or sex and still manage to hold my attention. She was writing at a time when there weren't a lot of women authors in that genre and many of those who did used a man's name to publish under.Murdoc Jern and Eet are challenged with staying alive, learning to trust each other and to solve the mystery of the "Zero Stone". This is not a cliff-hanger, but there is a sequel to it, "Uncharted Stars", that is also quite excellent.

The Zero Stone Andre Norton 9780441959662 Books Reviews
The only reason I didn't give this one a 5 stars that most of her books are much better. Anyone else would have gotten 5 stars. She knows how to hold your attention and her story moves right along. Now looking for the second book in this series.
I loved this book as a child and was thrilled to find it on . It's not as sophisticated (or depressing) as current YA literature, but it's great for its time and is still a fun read. I cut my scifi teeth on Andre Norton, and she was one of my favorite authors back in the day. It's fun to go back and read these oldies but goodies. My only regret was that I didn't have an Eet of my own.
The story line has all the attributes of her work back in the fifties/sixties. Appears written for teen audience, but appeals to me as she was one of my favorite authors, back then (1952-61) and the variety of her works is a study unto itself. She taught a course at Middle Tn State U in Murfreesboro, Tn while I was student no doubt gave rise to NEW lines of Sci-fi authors. Her Witch series, and Time travelers et al at entertaining and classic. I heartily reccomend ANY of Norton's books
This is a poor reward for those loyal fans of Andre Norton. It was poorly edited. I was disappointed and I am sure Andre Norton would have been, too.
As a Rockhound you know that I will read a book that has rock or stone in the title. Zero Stone was well worth the effort - classic SF by a legendary author. Modern authors and publishers should take note; you don't have to take a whole book to develop a character or introduce a plot. You can tell a complete story rather than leaving a storyline hanging out there in hopes that the reader will buy the next book in the "series"; it is OK to give the story an ending. Zero Stone is a good example. I'm not sure if the characters from Zero Stone show up in a later novel, but if they don't you at least have a satisfactory ending. Zero Stone is a quick,Satisfying read that would be great for any fan of Classic SF.
As is common among Norton's works, the story moves quickly from one dire situation to another, with the protagonist often being saved at the last minute by what seems a deus ex machina. I say 'protagonist', rather than 'hero', for Murdoc Jern is too much at the whims of others to truly be heroic in this book, despite showing signs that he may yet become the hero we wish him to be. The book is clearly only the beginning of a quest, for its denouement is a cliff-hanger of sorts. Jern and his enigmatic companion have survived the frying pan but have yet to enter the fire.
This is one of my two favorite books of all time--and I don't say that lightly. I have an extensive library of cherished books and read voraciously. I particularly like the relationship between the main character, a gemologist named Murdoc Jern and the alien life form called Eet that he takes on as a traveling companion. They have a rather acerbic symbiotic relationship, but each needs the other for murky purposes. Their search for the Zero Stone takes them across space. Ands don't miss the sequel, "Uncharted Stars". The ending alone is worth this duo of SciFi classics. Two other Norton books which are favorites of mine are "Sargasso of Space" and "Exiles of the Stars" (my other favorite)--both are outstanding tales of human and aliens that Norton does so well. "Moon of Three Rings" is the prequel to "Exiles".
