First, a confession: I don't read YA books as a rule, so take my opinions with a grain of salt.

What stands out to me about this book is the intriguing mystery the author has created. Being the first book in a series, a substantial amount of groundwork is laid out, yet enough is held back to entice you to come back for more. As I was nearing the end, a slew of unanswered questions swam around in my head, but in the way the author wanted them to. She wanted me thinking about where the story would go next. She pointed in the direction, then wouldn't allow me to go there... yet. Well done.

Another thing that stood out to me was how crisp the editing was. There were a couple of minor bumps such as words repeated too often and writer's tics, but nothing that pulled me out of the story. Her prose is tight, and she paints each scene in descriptive detail.

Being a 35-year old male, I am clearly not the target audience, so some of the more thought-provoking moral dilemmas didn't hit home as hard with me as they would a teenage girl. Regardless, Miss McDonald has implemented them well, and I can plainly see how this book would resonate for the demographic it is intended for.

I gave this book four-stars instead of five based on a couple of nagging points. One of which is that it suffers a little bit of an identity crisis. While I can't say for certain that Miss McDonald was intending this to be a YA novel, it leans closer in that direction than any other. Yet, she tiptoes over the line every so often. I personally am not offended by that, but I think about the missed opportunity of having this book read in schools. It feels a bit too young to be a high school read, but the rougher language makes it unsuitable for kids. I think Miss McDonald should pick a rating going forward with this series, and then blow it out, whichever direction she chooses.

Though I suspect this won't bother all readers, I felt like the addition of parkour owned a little too much of the story's back-half. There was a stretch of about five or six chapters in a row that all dealt with Ada's parkour training, which got a bit tiresome. Again, could just be a personal thing that may not apply to everyone.

All in all, this was a good read, and R.A. McDonald's talent really shines. If this is just her first book, I can't even fathom how much better the second one will be!

Ada is a captivating character. She's a rebel but not a reckless one, she has a strong sense of right and wrong. She's courageous and she has the skills to support her bravery. Ada's quest to find and help her Mom turns into an exciting and dangerous venture that kept me absorbed to the last page!
To short
The title is way overblown (legend?? C'mon!) The reader needs to make too many leaps to really buy into the story - just too many gaps in information. Plus, the main character is incredibly annoying. I won't be continuing with the rest of the series.
Haven't read a book of this sort but when I read the synopsis of the story it did give me the kick to read it from start to finish.
I loved how Ada struggled with her powers, thinking she was a freak only to find that she was not alone with her 'gift'.
Great read! Fun, imaginative and thought provoking. This is well written and puts the reader on the ground (or in the air) with the characters. I thought this might be a book for teens, but adults love it just as much. RA, I hope you have another book in the wings cause I can't wait for more!
I found this book to bring out so many emotions within me. Understanding Ada's behavior in the beginning of the book was troublesome to me, but understanding where she came from and what she has already been through explains a lot. I am so enjoying her experiencing different levels of maturity and the confusion of it all. Having such a gift makes one wonder how they would handle it? I really enjoyed all the characters so far, well maybe except for one, her mother
....however; then again maybe there is more to her than has been relayed so far. Oh what a gift to be able to create such wonderful stories............The artwork added so much to the story, as it not only showed you what Ada looked like, but also how she must have been feeling at those moments.......I can't wait for the next book, and I hope many more to come, as I can see Ada's gift taking her on many adventures and touching many people's lives. BRAVO!
